It’s no surprise that with so many local breweries within Derbyshire, that Chesterfield CAMRA has embraced the CAMRA initiative that promotes local pubs that always serve local beer!
LocAle is a scheme that was originated by the Nottingham branch of CAMRA, essentially to encourage locally brewed ale to be available in pubs local to that brewery. It is hoped that the scheme will improve choice for the drinker, will encourage people to visit local pubs to seek this new choice, pubs will benefit from the increased publicity the scheme will offer, local breweries will flourish due to increased demand and local drinkers will identify more with them. The environment should also benefit from the fact that beers have only a short distance to travel.
Before we launched our scheme in August 2008, we canvassed branch members to tell us which pubs around our area ALWAYS had at least one locally produced beer on their bar.
A travelling distance (not as the crow flies) of approximately 25 miles between the place the beer was brewed to the pub that is serving it was agreed as the eligible criteria. Since then the list has grown to over 30 pubs and names are still coming in.
If your local ALWAYS stocks a beer brewed locally then all we ask is that you let us know! If we don’t know about it, we can’t thank them for giving us a local beer to sample!
